Position on Responsible Use of AI

Person using tablet at night in city.

The widespread propagation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) reasoning and execution has touched all scientific disciplines. No scientist is immune, and every scientist must decide what kind of research environment they want to build and inhabit.

The Smargon Laboratory takes an unequivocal position on the subject. Personal accountability matters, for now and for the future of the scientific endeavor. We view AI as a production assistant, not a director or an editor, of our science. As such, we use AI selectively and intentionally.

Where we use AI:

  • Accelerating understanding of new or complex concepts
  • Refining hypotheses
  • Optimising experimental design and conditions for rigour and reproducibility
  • Processing data for analysis
  • Predictive and generative modelling for use in experimental validation

Where we do NOT use AI:

  • Determining project ideas
  • Driving research directions
  • Composing any manuscript or grant text or figures
  • Peer reviewing any confidential manuscript or grant*

* Journals and granting agencies, kindly note that any referred confidential manuscript or grant suggesting substantial AI composition will be rejected or penalised accordingly.
