Genetics plays a defining role in human diversity and longevity. The Smargon Laboratory works to understand mechanistically (1) how biological systems encode genetic information and (2) how genetic information imparts resilience to biological ageing. Putting these two questions together, we ask, “What minimal genetic encoding makes biological systems built to last?”

To address these questions, we combine interdisciplinary approaches across life sciences, physical sciences, computation, engineering, and medicine. A major focus of our laboratory is to elucidate and program protein-RNA interactions already present in human cells to control the sequences and expression levels of genes (Smargon et al., 2026).

Ultimately, our laboratory’s research is geared toward building better methods, models, and medicines to treat diseases today and extend human healthspans tomorrow.
